范文
Well, the person I’d like to talk about is Liu Xiang, who is now a retired 110-meter hurdler and also an Olympic gold medal winner.
Personally, I am quite into track and field sports, even though I don’t have much spare time to do it. However, I love watching the track and field competitions and first saw Liu Xiang on TV when I was a freshman back in high school. My bigger brother is also a huge fan of Liu, and I can still remember those wonderful time we spent together cheering for Liu in front of a television.
Liu Xiang is, without doubt, one of the most successful athletes in China and has been considered a cultural icon by many Chinese people. What he did has indeed made history. I mean, as an Asian, he is the only one ever to have achieved the ‘triple crown’ in the field of 110-metre hurdles, a world record holder, a world champion and an Olympic champion.
I guess there are a couple of reasons why he is so well-known in China, one of which is that, back in the year 2004, he became the first Chinese person ever to win an Olympic gold medal in the event of track and field, and set a new world record for the 110-meter hurdles competition. I can still remember that, the moment he crossed the finish line, everyone in the stadium jumped up and cheered for this young Chinese man, wild with joy. After the match, he said in an interview, and I quote, ‘I want to change the idea that Asian countries cannot get good results in sprint races. I want to prove to people that Asians can run very fast.’ I believe I was not the only one who burst into tears of excitement after hearing what he said. At that very moment, every single Chinese person got so proud of him and our mother country.
Liu Xiang is a person working his butt off to achieve his goals. Sadly, at 2008 Beijing Olympics, he had to pull out of the competition at the last moment because of his foot injury. That was heartbreaking, but he is still our hero.
