Themilitary,whichbroughtdownademocraticallyelectedgovernmentlastmonthandnowpullsthestringsofanominallycivilianexecutive,hasignitedIslamistfuryfurtherbytryingtocrushtheMuslimBrotherhood.Hundredsofleadershavebeenroundedupandjailed,whileMrMorsiisbeingheldontrumped-upcharges.UntiltheresignationonWednesdayeveningofMohamedElBaradei,secularistsinthegovernmenthavestoodbyasstateforcesweredeployedagainstciviliansinweeksofclashesthathavelefthundredsdead.

Internationaleffortstobringthewarringcampstothebargainingtablehavefailed.DiplomaticmissionsbytheUSandEUcouldnotpreventthebloodshedonWednesday.Yetmorethandiplomacyisneededtooveetheintransigenceofthosewhobelievetheonlypathtovictoryisthedestructionoftheother.Washingtonhassofarrefusedtosuspendthe$1.3bninaidtoEgypt’smilitary.Thisshouldnowbedoneuntiltheviolenceishaltedandallpartiesagreetotalks.ThereleaseofMrMorsihastobeonthetable.
