798ArtZone,orDashanziArtDistrict,isapartofDashanziintheChaoyangDistrtrictofBeijingthathouseesathrivingartisticmunity,among50-yearolddmissionedmilitaryfactorybuildingsofuniquearchitecturalstyle.itisoftenparedwithNewYork'sGreenwichVillageofSoHo.

Theareaisoftencalledthe798ArtDistrictorFactory798althoughtechnically,Factory#798isonlyoneofseveralstructureswithinaplexformerlyknownasJointFactory718.Thebuildingarelocatedinsideallreysnumber2and4JiuXianQiaoLu(酒仙橋路),SouthoftheDaShanZIFlyover(大山子橋)。

TheDashanzifactoryplexwasvacatedataroundthetimewhenmostofBeijing'scontemporaryartistmunitywaslookingforanewhome.Thedistrict'spopularityhasexplodedsincetheopeningofBTAPand798Spacein2002,withscoresofgalleries,lofts,publishingfirms,designpanies,high-endtailorshops,andcafesandfancyrestaurantssettingup.In2003,around30artistsandorganizationshadsetupstudiosorofficesinthearea,with200morereportedlyonthewaitinglisttomovein.Inkeepingwiththearea'smunityspirit",mostgalleriesinDashanzidonotchargeeitherexhibitorsorvisitors.Instead,theygenerallysustainthemselvesbyhostingprofitablefashionshowsandcorporateevents.DashanziisnowacenterofBeijing'snascent"BOBO"(bourgeois-bohemian)munity.

798藝術(shù)區(qū)，或稱大山子藝術(shù)區(qū)，是由北京國營電子工業(yè)老廠區(qū)的名稱沿用至今。同時，798也指代這一藝術(shù)區(qū)引申出的一種文化概念，以及LOFT這種時尚的居住與工作方式。從2001年開始，來自北京周邊和北京以外的藝術(shù)家開始集聚798廠，，他們以藝術(shù)家獨有的眼光發(fā)現(xiàn)了此處對從事藝術(shù)工作的獨特優(yōu)勢。他們充分利用原有廠房的風(fēng)格（德國包豪斯建筑風(fēng)格），稍作裝修和修飾，使其成為富有特色的藝術(shù)展示盒創(chuàng)作空間，并發(fā)展成為畫廊、藝術(shù)中心、藝術(shù)家工作室，設(shè)計公司、餐飲酒吧等各種空間的聚合，形成了具有國際化色彩的“SOHO式藝術(shù)群落”和“LOFT生活方式”，而且進(jìn)入798藝術(shù)區(qū)參觀是不需要門票的。現(xiàn)今798已經(jīng)成為了北京都市文化的新地標(biāo)。
